One of the new glass palaces in the heart of Berlin is causing a stir. As the second investor after
Daimler-Chrysler, Sony has now opened its Entertainment Center at Potsdamer Platz, one of the most historical
locations in the city. Where the Wall between West and East Berlin once ran, the Japanese electronics giant
soon expects to be welcoming 15.000 visitors a day. Entering through a roofed courtyard, they will find a
Multiplex cinema, an Imax 3D cinema, and an innovative world of music. Also offices, apartments, shops and
restaurants make the Center a city within the city, right in the heart of Berlin.
Sony would not be Sony if it did not make use of reliable and proven architecture. On the gigantic glass
dome above the courtyard, known as the "Forum", and on the Office Tower, multi-pole enclosed conductor systems
from VAHLE provide the power to
the crane-like arms for the gondolas (see picture on the right). The Gondolas are needed for cleaning the huge
areas of glass - to ensure that the visitors and staff always have a clear view.Above the remains of the former world-famous Hotel Esplanade, Sony has built a complex of 134 apartments, the "Esplanade-Residence". The apartments are suspended from a unique steel structure. |
